THE PREZ SEZ

Jim and Cindy Cook, and Gary Austin, have agreed to act as the Nominating Committee for next year's officers.

The membership was talking about having another Fun Fly on the 28th of this month.  It would be even lower key than the last one if that were possible!     I'm not sure if there would even be any prizes, but just to get together to fly as a club.  Perhaps Pete could initiate the Drag Race event he described to me a short time ago.

Last but certainly not least, a big  Thank You to Cindy Cook for taking Bill Berson's place as Secretary last evening!

Cheers,

Bob

AROUND THE CLUB

>I put all of the club timers in the First Aid cabinet. We seem to have plenty of bandages, but not many Band-Aids. I’m not sure if we have any disinfectant or not.

>Special thanks to everyone who helped me regain stuff for this newsletter—like the minutes and other member inputs. I still have the original newsletter on a floppy, but it will not let me access the material!

NEW MEMBERS

Dave Carter and Tom Egan-- I sure would like to hear from you.

I hope to obtain a brief bio and a picture of our new members to enhance their introduction to the membership. This is voluntary on the part of the newbys, but it should be beneficial for all.

HINTS, KINKS, AND STUFF

>From a non-modeling friend:

I think this B-29 was built by a man I worked with.  His name is Jim R Johnson, JR for short.  I saw it fly many times around Ojai Calif.  He would do bombing runs and the pilot would wave to the crowd during a flyby.  After he retired he was working on a B-52 with 6 motors.  I don’t know if he ever finished it

JUST PLANE FUN

Marg and I attended Russ and Nancy Petersen’s 50th wedding anniversary in early July. Russ was our first newsletter editor, and my writing partner for our little training manual. After the festivities in Albany we moved to Florence, OR where they live and enjoyed meeting and getting acquainted with their wonderful family.

Russ and I went flying in a city park with a bunch of the locals the first day. The park is about the right size for small electrics, and that is what most folks were flying. I got in 2 flights on my YAK 54, but it is still tail heavy. There was a club float fly at a lake in a local state park the next day which we attended. Their club puts on about 2 float flies a month during warmer weather.

That is Russ with a dandy electric Cub. Notice the bandages on his left hand—they cover 20+ stitches caused by the dreaded hand in prop syndrome. The stitches are gone now and all that remains is a bit of tenderness.

This beauty is a kit bashed Sweet Stick from some old RCM plans. It flew as well as it looks and was the only fuel-powered plane at the float fly!

There is an R/C boat at the left edge of the picture and there are 3 planes in the air. The bad part about this flying site is that you must fly facing the sun (note the shadows).

These Florence pilots really have float flying figured out. All the planes made it to shore under power every time, so there was no need for the retrieval boat. Also there were no crashes. Most of the landings and takeoffs were picture perfect.

SPARKS

I have written several times about the trials and tribulations I have had with my YAK 54. I guess I am not the only one, as Hobby Lobby no longer carries the "suitcase" series in their catalogue. I did see an almost identical airplane flown in Mesa last winter that had the servos for rudder and elevator moved forward. This plane was a 3D demon—and the pilot was no slouch either! I guess there is another supplier importing these "corrected" models.

My next step will be to exchange the 1200 MAH battery for an 1800 MAH one in hopes the added, but useful weight will get the CG far enough forward to turn this pig into an angel.

EDITORIAL—Protecting club property

I went to the field on one of our many rainy days to put the club timers where they could be accessed by all of us. I noticed the shed locking bar was not engaged after I got the lock off. The door looked locked, but anyone could have opened it just by pulling up on the handle.

The door lock is composed of a sickle shaped bar that goes under another bar as the locking handle is rotated with the door closed. If you look closely, you can see the sickle shaped bar swing down and under the other bar.

If the door is correctly locked you must rotate the locking handle to the right (clockwise) to disengage the bars. No one seems to have any trouble with this. To lock the shed, ensure the movable locking bar is retracted (handle fully to the right), push the door as far down as it will go, rotate the locking handle to the left (counterclockwise) until the lock holes align while watching the locking bar engage, pull up on the door to ensure it is really locked, then install the combination lock (I like to get the combination numbers sanitized before I install the lock so I can see better).

The equipment in the shed has been made possible by generous donations and precious dues saved over many years. Please help protect our assets by being very careful when locking the shed…and pull up on the door to be sure!!!!!!

FOR SALE OR TRADE

>I will be bringing a bench grinder to the next meeting that is FREE to the first taker. It works OK, but one of the grinding wheels should probably be replaced with something finer. If you don’t want to wait until the meeting, give me a call at 379-3185 and we will get together. Pete Granger

If you want to list an item, just send me the details including your name, phone number, and asking price or trade-for item. Low pixel count digital (JPEG) pictures are also acceptable.
