FROM THE PRESIDENT

Tri-Area Fun-Fly 2010
It seemed it rained almost every day for months, but June 12 was CAVU
(clear and view unlimited) with no significant wind. Everything went
as planned or better with the help of many volunteers. The Carrier
event was most popular but was also more difficult than anybody had
expected. Even with some previous practice, I was unable to finish
the first and second round. Fortunately, my third round was much better.

Thanks everyone, it was a fun event.
Bill Berson

MINUTES OF THE LAST MEETING

Meeting was opened at 7:05 pm.

Attending: Dantzler, Davis, Nisbet, Calkins, Johnson, Fitch, Anliker, Henley, Marken, Carter, Maupin, Greene, Berger, J. Beres, Berson, Pendleton and Cochran.

Guests Present: Doug Anable, Vern Kennedy and Chuck Charles (sp).

Minutes posted on the web site were approved as submitted.

Treasurers Report: Bank of America checking expenses were $770.83 with an income of $ 0.02, leaving that account with a balance of $ 1,907.43. The CD is currently $ 6,680.63.

Safety Report: Seth Stephens (see below)

Old Business: Fun fly discussed. The 3 competitions were finalized. The events are "3 loops and land, carrier landing and dead stick with spot landing. The prizes for the contests will be gift cards from RC Hobbies in Sequim.

New Business: Pete Hanke’s 3 bladed prop came off and made a loop like a boom-a-rang. There was conversation around the table concerning safety needs relating to the use of 3 bladed props. It appeared that the 2 bladed props are generally safer.

General: The riding mower is currently down getting some repair. Anyone who wants a good buy on fuel, contact Jim Crumley. Loran Nisbet brought his newly constructed "Flying Super Dude", a flying surf board with a surfer pilot in the cockpit looking for the Big One.

Crash of the Month: Alden Johnson is convinced that maneuvers too close to the ground with an "Ultra Stick" are not a great idea. He poked that stick right into the ground. When the vote was in it was all for Alden.

Service Award: None.

Business meeting closed at 7:50 pm.

Program: Was presented by Alden Johnson. He shared his Phoenix simulator program. Included was an opportunity to have some hands on stick time.

AROUND THE CLUB

J Thanks to John Fitch for this goody:

Here's some footage taken via a helmet-mounted video camera worn
by the pilot of a Navy T-45 jet trainer as it is catapulted from an
aircraft carrier's deck and then circles around to land again on the
carrier.  This is called "taking a lap."  This presentation is about as
close as one can get to the real experience save for the acceleration
and "g" loading experienced during the real experience.

J Bob Kampmann is sharing this lipo source:

We are now offering a complete line of low cost lipos direct from our supplier overseas.  There are over 300 lipo packs to choose from, including hard cased lipos.  We are offering a 90 day warranty on these lipos backed by us.  We are also offering your choice of common plug and one of 3 major taps.  The packs come with Align style but if you choose Polyquest or Thunder power instead we will simply provide you with a free adapter which is a $5.00 value.  Free shipping will still apply to domestic orders of $50.01 or more and for international orders $150.00 or more.

How is this different from other items you order from our website?  This is a lot different because we are ordering the product as you order it.  When we do orders direct from factories there is about a 30 day window.  In some cases product can take longer depending on how busy the factory is.  Since we are ordering product for you we can afford to lower the prices as we don't need to guess what to stock.  Also, by buying this way, we can present you with the entire line the factory has to offer and not a small subset of packs.

You will also notice that products have price ranges now.  That is because we can give further discounts based on quantity.  The discount quantity is based on how many lipos of the same exact type you purchase at one time and not just the total # of packs in general.

If you are a club, reseller, or just like a lot of lipos, you can get some ridiculous pricing by taking advantage of these tiers.

The lipo page has some interesting filter options.  Think of the buttons as preset radio stations.  As you click on a button the web page will refresh.  So give it some time.  Also we preset it to start with 30c, 3s, 3000mah which happens to only show one item.  That simply means that of the 300 packs we only have one pack that fits that criteria.  The best thing to do is play around with the button.  When a button turns green it means that is what you have chosen and is part of the filter.  So if you click on 5000mah then only 5000-5999mah packs will be listed.

If you click on the "ANY" buttons next to a particular filter option then that option will no longer be used.  Example:  for MAH if you choose "ANY" then you choose 3s and 30C,  then any 3s,30C lipo will show no matter the capacity.  If you choose ANY for all 3 then you will get all 300+ packs listed.

Measurement filter:  This is a very handy little tool.  This will allow you to find any lipos that match a certain size.  So if you need to fit within a certain space then putting sizes in these boxes will filter all selections based on size as well as the other filter. A common way to use this is to select "ANY" for both capacity and c-rate.  But select a voltage.  Enter your measurements and click find.  Only those lipos that fit within those measurements will show.

Examples of what the measurement filter can be used for:
1) You have a tight space that is X by Y by Z and need to know what lipo could fit. (Select ANY) for all filters and input your size (X=height,Y=width,Z=length)
2) You have a current lipo you want to replace with one of ours.  First measure your current lipo and then enter the measurements in the 3 boxes.  Select any for Capacity and C-rate, select the voltage you require based on your current pack.
3) You have a NIMH/NiCad pack you want to replace with a Lipo.  Measure the NIMH/ pack, enter measurements into the boxes, select "ANY" for capacity and C-Rate.  Select a voltage (2s,3s) that you require.

Policies and more rules will be presented to you when you first enter the Factory Direct area and also again when you check out.  Basically the main thing is that there is a 30 day wait (can be less of course but could be up to 6 weeks).

J Thanks to Larry Berger for this announcement:

Ye olde editor: Once again I have been thwarted by this cursed machine. Look for the announcement as an attachment to the e-mail.

J Thanks to Cindy Cook for this pearl of wisdom:

Attached is a picture I took of an EasyStar in a homemade carrying "box". Thought it might be of interest to the RC club in the newsletter.

J Thanks to Jack Becker for this guide to scientific servo selection:

Ye olde editor: I was not able to insert a legible copy, so had to resort to another attachment. You will want to blow the item up to at least 150% to read this good stuff.

JUST PLANE FUN

J A mother and her young son were flying Southwest Airlines from Kansas City to Chicago .

The little boy (who had been looking out the window) turned to his mother and asked, 'If big dogs have baby dogs and big cats have baby cats, why don't big planes have baby planes?'

The mother (who couldn't think of an answer) told her son to ask the flight attendant.

So the boy went down the aisle and asked the flight attendant, 'If big dogs have baby dogs and big cats have baby cats, why don't big planes have baby planes?'

The busy flight attendant smiled and said, 'Did your mother tell you to ask me?'

The boy said, 'Yes, she did.'

'Well, then, you go and tell your mother that there are no baby planes because Southwest always pulls out on time.  Have your mother explain that to you.

J During a commercial airline flight an Air Force Pilot was seated next to a young mother with a babe in arms. When the baby began crying during the descent for landing, the mother began nursing the infant as discreetly as possible.

The pilot pretended not to notice and, upon disembarking, he gallantly offered his assistance to help with the various baby-related items.

When the young mother expressed her gratitude, the pilot responded, "Gosh, that's a good looking baby...and he sure was hungry!"

Somewhat embarrassed, the mother explained that her pediatrician said that the time spent on the breast would help alleviate the pressure in the baby's ears.

The Air Force Pilot sadly shook his head, and in true pilot fashion exclaimed, "And all these years, I've been chewing gum."

FIELD MAINTENANCE

Pete Bruce has signed up for July. I sure hope the mower gets fixed in time to support his efforts. July is one of our real growing months, so he will have his hands full! Be sure to thank Pete for taking on this big job.

SAFETY—by Seth Stevens

We hear and give all kinds of reasons when we see a model brought back to the pit area in a paper bag. Some are realistic, some lamenting, others seeking outside reasons, some humorous and some reflecting puzzlement, but according to a chart in the November issue of Model Aviation 28 of their 30 reasons for crashes involved Improper equipment setup. Although you may, as I did, disagree with how some of the causes were classified I believe the chart brought out one strong point. Using the right equipment and setting it up correctly is vital to safe flying. Random failure including failure of the battery, a switch, receiver or a servo only accounted for 13 percent of the crashes. Equipment choice including flutter, incorrect linkage geometry, and again inadequate servo torque or stripped gears accounted for another 13 percent. Only 16 percent of the accidents included poor preflight maintenance checks. These were failure to check batteries or improper charging, loose nuts, bolts and screws, reversed controls, and improper connection of extensions. All but 6 percent of the above causes were also linked to setup issues. If nothing else these statistics should give us something to think about whether we are constructing a model from scratch or simply completing an ARF.

EDITORIAL

We came across mention of WORLD'S LARGEST COLLECTION OF MODEL AIRPLANES in a tourist brochure.  An internet search revealed that the models were all of airline type planes of various vintages, carefully decked out in the appropriate airline colors.  The collection of non-flying models is displayed in the Big Fork, MT airline terminal.  What a downer!
