MINUTES OF THE LAST MEETING

Meeting opened by President Greg Marken at 7:05 pm.

The members present were: Lawrence Pendleton, Bill Berson, Roy Greene, Jim and Cindy Cook, Gary Austin, Randy Calkins, Lew Creedon, Bill Anliker, James Crumley, Bob Kampman, Grant Smith, Seth Stephens, Greg Marken and David Carter.

Guests: Our guest was Rick O’Shay.

Minutes posted on Web Site, additions or corrections? The previous minutes were approved as submitted.

Treasurers Report: Report was shared by Greg Marken as follows: expense in September of $ 248.98 (mostly Olypen Web. Site) and $45.00 income. Bank of America account now at $1,757.36, and the CD is worth $6,144.32.

Safety Report by Seth Stevens: It has been my observation that most members are very good about announcing their intentions; such as "dead stick landing", "Going on the field", or "Taking off", however, we are not too good about getting an acknowledgement from all the pilots on the line that the requested intention has been heard or understood. This is where we can get into trouble. So let’s all make a concerted effort to not only state our intention loudly and clearly but (most important) receive a clear verbal reply from each pilot on the line that the request has been heard and understood before we proceed with our intended action. Safety is every pilot’s responsibility and this clear announcement and acknowledgement will help prevent unnecessary mishaps.

Old Business: None.

New Business: Attention Club Members: 1. – there is an E-Mail going out to call attention to the upcoming Christmas Party. 2. – For those who are on maintenance detail – BE SURE TO ADD THE "OUT HOUSE" TO THE SERVICE LIST. Randy Calkins, "The Main Man" who makes certain that the holding tank gets emptied each and EVERY MONTH, says to be sure that the tank is maintained with the water/disinfectant solution. 3. - Make certain that all locks are locked. 4. – Remember to get your dues paid by the November Meeting……It looks like a busy night for Larry.

General: Lew Creedon brought back the "Free Crash Certificate". Then, it got raffled off so that someone can make plans for someone’s next crash.

Crash of the Month: Grant Smith volunteered to share his loss, but Pete Bruce and Pete Hanke pushed that conversation clean off the runway and they made a "mad dash" for the trophy. With a number of hair standing maneuvers and then a final plunge to earth, Pete Bruce’s finish got a big bunch of hands raised to vote him as winner.

Service Award: None.

Closing: Meeting closed at 8:00 pm.

Program: Bill Berson shared some of his Aero Towing experiences in times past. And, very recently, he’s back at it in a small scale fashion.

AROUND THE CLUB

J Thanks to Bill Berson for this:

Here are some photos (ye olde editor: sorry, I could not get Bill’s excellent pictures to transfer) submitted as proof that a glider aero tow was performed at Tri-Area RC field Oct 6 2009.

Tow pilot: Walt Johnsen

Glider pilot: Bill Berson

Because the aircraft lacked a rope release, everyone assumed a double crash would result. But with detailed planning, several flights with various pilots were flown without crashing. The glider was a large balsa flying wing. It worked well and we had a blast.

NEW MEMBERS

I hope to obtain a brief bio and a picture of our new members to enhance their introduction to the membership. This is voluntary on the part of the newbie, but it should be beneficial for all.

HINTS, KINKS, AND STUFF

J From ye olde editor: R/C Report is now on the web at www.rcreport.net.  It is a subscription deal for $24.95 for the cheap version and 29.95 for the downloadable PDF kind.  Mostly the same players as near as I can work out without subscribing.

J From friends Bob and Joyce Skoien:
This is a most amazing Remote Controlled [RC] model airplane - click link below to see it fly. Not only did they build its jet engines, but included retractable landing gear, and built it into a fully scaled model of the SR-71 that is good enough to fly. This SR-71 model was built by some German Engineer RC enthusiasts, and this is one nifty toy - and sounds REAL!

Ye olde editor: This is too long unless you have some sort of high speed service. Note the speed and deflection of the elevators when he checks his controls.

FAR FLUNG FLYING

I visited former member Russ Petersen in Florence, OR in late September. While there I got in a couple of flights at their new flying field which is located next to the active runway of the local airport. They have to monitor the local airplane frequency AND have a dedicated spotter. Several times people had to land early to accommodate full size air traffic.

The Douglas County RC Club held a float fly at a local lake (Woahink Lake Park). They fly from a small beach adjacent to the boat launch in a bay that is not as far across (perhaps 2 or 3 hundred yards to steep terrain and trees) as I would like, but there were no problems.

That is my old Senior Telemaster coming back from a mission. Russ says it is an ideal float plane since he put a young OS90FX in it.

Just imagine 3 Northstars racing flat out almost like a pylon race. The DCRC guys made it look easy and it sure was entertaining for the rest of us!

The 3 Northstars still drying off after their race. The little beach that folks fly from (and launch and retrieve airplanes) is in the background.

This electric flat foamy copies the Northstar basic design with Laddie M’s permission. There were at least 6 of these things at the float fly and all of them flew well. With a wide open motor they were very fast, but they were stable in slow flight as well. Takeoffs and landings seemed less splashy than the other planes. It is called the POLARIS and information about it plus ordering capability is available from: http://modelaero.com/Merchant5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=M&Product_Code=POL-1&Category_Code=AM

FIELD MAINTENANCE

It has been a while since I checked the signup sheet in the shed, but the last I knew November had no one signed up.

EDITORIAL

I fly at a lot of different fields during my travels. Each area seems to have its own version of spotters and signals, so I have been exposed to a number of systems. Some places require a dedicated spotter for each pilot flying. The restrictions the Florence group deals with (see FAR FLUNG FLYING) are unique to my experience.

I guess I sort of stirred things up in my last editorial that covered an incident at the field.

I reported that Roy Greene called that he was on the field and went to retrieve his airplane. Pilot A brings his airplane to the runway and takes off, just missing Roy. Gary calls for landing his plane and pilot B brings his model to the runway, announces taking off, and does so.

Note that our 2 miscreants came from the pit area AFTER Roy and Gary announced their intent. I like Seth’s request that the pilots acknowledge intent announcements, but the folks in the pits are not included in the response phase, and probably ignore the announcements. Seth’s method does serve to eliminate our problem anyway if pilots A and B hold until they get the OK from those flying—or are informed of prior announcements.

FOR SALE OR TRADE

If you want to list an item, just send me the details including your name, phone number, and asking price or trade-for item. Low pixel count digital (JPEG) pictures are also acceptable.

MONTHLY MEETING—November 10 at 7:00 in the SKP Clubhouse

It is dues night, so be sure to come prepared to ante up. Then watch the emotions of the other club members as they part with scarce hobby dollars. The bored will meet at 6:30 as usual. I have no information about a program.
