MINUTES OF THE LAST MEETING—

September 15th, 2011

President Seth Stephens opened the meeting for business at 7:02 pm.

The members attending were: Pendleton, Berson, Stephens, Crumley, Anliker, Henley, Fitch, Johnson, Annble, Jones, Bayless, Tom and Jeff Beres.

The guests present were: Dick Daley and Doris Bayless.

The last month’s minutes posted on the web site were approved as submitted.

The new Treasurer, Bill Berson, gave his report as follows: The Bank of America checking account had a $.00 income and expense of $ 100.02 which brought its balance to $ 2,640.75. The current balance of the Quimper CD is $ 6,873.03

There was no safety report.

Old Business: Seth Stephens reported that the fun fly had fun. He gave those who helped in cleaning out the flying field shed a big thank you, and also a thank you to Roy Greene for building shelves for the field shed. Roy also took the broken mower home and brought it back to life.

And, a thank you to Jim Crumley, He did some concrete demolition at home and turned the broken pieces into fill for the pot holes in the dirt road to the flying field.

New Business: Dick Daley didn’t stay on the guest side of the attendance list. Before the meeting really got going he was voted in as a new member.

Seth said that he did not find anything new reported about the FAA and how the modelers might be affected. Seth reminded the members that volunteers are needed on maintenance at the flying field for the months of October, November and December. Ye olde editor: The last I knew Jim Crumley had signed up for December.

General: Seth Stephens penned a new addition to the Bylaws. Earl Jones and David Henley agreed that the wording of "Residents" be changed to "Lease Holders". With that correction made, Bill Anliker moved to accept the new addition to the bylaws and the vote was all hands saying yes around the table.

Dick Daley offered a P-61 Blackwidow to anyone who would like to finish its construction.

Crashes: Seth Stephens said that not having a clear and very visible paint scheme was the reason his plane went "straight in". It seems one needs to be able to follow the path of one’s aeroplane all the way around the pattern.

And, Tom Beres has a small question mark about the fun at the fun fly event. His dead stick landing did not offer enough control for that "I think I can make it back to the field if I make a quick left turn. OOPS!" Who put that fence post right there! It really was a cool Jet too.

Service Award: Yours truly moved to give Roy Greene a service award for all those extras he’s been doing. Seth Stephens gave a second to the motion and all present were in agreement. Roy Greene was not present which therefore made it very difficult to "wiggle out" of getting an award.

The meeting was brought to a close at 7:33 pm.

New changes to the Bylaws:

8. Membership dues shall be prorated for new first-time members only. The amount shall be $ 5.00/month for members and $ 2.50/month for junior members starting the first of June.

9. All dues are due and payable the first (1st) of January. Delinquent members who have not paid their dues by the forth of February will be dropped from the membership.

New part:

Appendix A

10. In exchange for providing facilities for the Tri-Area RC Flyers monthly meetings, all lease holders of the SKP will be granted free annual membership after satisfying all other requirements in Article VIII.

AROUND THE CLUB

J From Jim Tolpin in response to the Fly Like an Eagle video:

Thanks for forwarding....I think this is at Fort Casey near the ferry landing, a great place to fly in Southerlies. Maybe I'll organize a trip over that way this fall when the southerlies start up!

J From The Cooks: Here is a good video for your collection:

http://www.youtube.com/embed/NA-ST8nXl4U?rel=0,

We are in Honolulu. It's warm, sunny and beautiful. We went to an R/C field with a new friend, very active club here.

J Nate Moffett sent this EAA web site that has some spectacular night flying scenes:  http://bcove.me/wxa6wgn9

J Bill Anliker sent me a very interesting e-mail about drones. The following pictures are of three smaller ones:

The  morphing micro air/land vehicle, or MMALV, is a hybrid  that can fly, then land, fold up its wings and crawl  around buildings or other tight spaces. The MMALV project is lead by Bio Robots, in collaboration with the Biologically Inspired Robotics Laboratory at Case Western Reserve University, the University of Florida and the Naval Postgraduate School.

WASP is the smallest UAV in use today, weighing less than 300 grams. The miniaturization is achieved by the use of multifunctional components, like the combined wing/battery. WASP is nearly silent and, when flown at night, it's almost undetectable. The Air Force has just ordered several hundred for reconnaissance and bomb-damage assessment.

Originally used for tracking schools of tuna, the Scan Eagle drone is used by the Marine Corps in Iraq, where various versions of the model have flown several thousand hours of missions. It has a stabilized, gimbaled camera turret that can be fitted with either daylight or infrared imagers. No runway is required; instead it is fired aloft by a pneumatic launcher and retrieved by a rope-and-hook arrangement where a crane snags it out of mid-air.

NEW MEMBERS

I hope to obtain a brief bio and a picture of our new members to enhance their introduction to the membership. This is voluntary on the part of the newbie, but it should be beneficial for all.

DICK DALEY, HOW ABOUT A LITTLE SOMETHING FOR THE NEXT TALE SPINNER?

HINTS, KINKS, AND STUFF

Ye Olde Editor: I received this as an e-mail and thought I should share it with all of you:

Hello to those who, like myself, are hooked on model aviation. My name is Mike Mosbrooker and I am running for the position of AMA Vice President from District XI. I am sending this email to you because you either are a person of importance within the district or, in addition to being important, you have been a newsletter editor at one time or another, according to AMA records. If you are not currently a newsletter editor, I would greatly appreciate it if you would forward this email to the current an editor. I would greatly value your effort if you can find a place for this text within your newsletter or website.

I would appreciate the vote of you and your readers in the coming AMA election. If you and your readers don’t want to vote for me, please vote for someone. Ballots should be out later this month.

My complete election statement and those of all others running for AMA office can be found in the October issue of Model Aviation, with your ballot and on the AMA website. In the meantime, I have been a member of five clubs since the 1970's and have been an officer, newsletter editor, webmaster and runway sweeper in these clubs. I have been an AVP in District XI for the past eight years and have tried to assist clubs nearby in solving a variety of problems including field issues, rechartering and legal matters such as taxes and by laws. I often don’t have the answer to your questions right away but I really enjoy finding the answers in short order - most of the time.

I have three main areas of interest that I intend to address if elected. First, we need to involve more young people in Model Aviation by introducing them to the sport - many will not pursue modeling at this time but they will remember the experience later in life when they are seeking a meaningful hobby. Second, we need to focus on obtaining and retaining flying sites, the reason that most of our clubs exist. This is a multifaceted matter with no pat solutions but there are solutions to most site problems. And finally, I believe that AMA as an organization must continue to improve its communication with you, the member. The website is an important tool but people need to know it is there and when they access the site, all of us need to be able to find what we are looking for.

Questions? Please feel free to contact me at mosbrsr@comcast.net. Thank you for your considering me as your next AMA District XI VP.
