MINUTES OF THE LAST MEETING
June 14th, 2011
The meeting was opened for business at 7:07 pm.
The Members attending were: Berger, Bruce, Anable, Berson, Henley, Moffett, Greene, Tom Beres, Jeff Beres, Smith, Cindy Cook, Jim Cook, Stephens, Pendleton, Granger, Cochran and Downs.
Guests Present were: Dave Bobanick, A.J. Bayless and Dick Daley.
The minutes posted on the Web site were approved as submitted.
Treasurers Report: Jim Cook said that the balance for the Bank of America checking account for the month of April was $2,684.68. There was income of $14.02 which brings the new balance to $ 2,698.70. The CD is currently at $6,830.37.
Safety Report: Roy Greene says that it’s a good idea to make sure that all the controls on the transmitter are in the correct position before takeoff. Note: continue to crash of the month for reasons why.
Old Business: Seth Stephens says be sure to look at the new check list for the lawn mower when doing maintenance at the flying field. The check list will be mounted on the mower.
New Business: There was a unanimous vote and two new members (Dave Bobanick and A J Bayless) were brought into the Tri-Area RC Flyers Club.
There will be a show and tell event for our next club meeting. We were encouraged to bring models and whatever you would like to share with all those present. Do bring information (signs, posters, labels, etc.) to accompany your display.
General: There was a reminder that Airport Days is coming up July 16th. Set up time will begin at 9:00 am. Be sure to bring your models and support the club’s presence at the Jefferson County International Airport.
Pete Granger moved that we purchase a club banner to be within a cost of $300.00. Roy Greene seconded the motion and the vote was unanimous for the banner.
Pete Bruce shared about the completion of his new homebuilt Murphy Renegade Spirit biplane, code name Ying Yang Dragon.
Crash of the Month: As was begun earlier…."Some guy", says Roy Greene, "did not check his dual rates lever to make sure that said lever was NOT in the high rate position before he took off with his new electric 540 Edge that kept him on a very intense edge all the way to a hard nose first landing way off over there in no man’s land. It was not a pretty sight.
Service Award: None.
The meeting closed at 7:40 pm and a swap meet followed.
AROUND THE CLUB
L The Cooks are moving to Hawaii this Fall. Unfortunately they are both officers and will need to be replaced. Cindy is a director, and we can dial in a replacement at our next election. Jim, as treasurer, must be replaced before we lose him. Since transfer of this office is complicated by getting signature cards processed, the replacement should be willing to run for treasurer in our next election. Please call Seth if you are willing to take on this task, and Jim Cook if you want more information about the job.

J From Cindy Cook:
Saturday July 16th is Airport Day at the Jefferson County Airport. We have been asked to participate in this event. Please mark your calendar and plan to join in! Bring your models or something to display. See http:/www.jeffcopilots.com for details on the event.
NEW MEMBERS
I hope to obtain a brief bio and a picture of our new members to enhance their introduction to the membership. This is voluntary on the part of the newbie, but it should be beneficial for all.
We have 2 new members this month—a very rare occurrence.

This is Dave Bobanick being instructed by Bill Berson (Dave has since soloed).
Dave Bobanick, 125 Sea Vista Pl., Port Ludlow, WA, Age 72
My wife Sara and I moved to Port Ludlow in 1998 after a few years in Florida and having been born, raised, and raising our family in north central PA. We have a son and daughter, both of whom live in the Seattle Area, and 3 grandchildren.
I'm a Civil Engineer graduate of Penn State, class of 1960. My main career was with the PA Dept. of Transportation (30+ years). I also spent a few years with Collier County Public Works in Florida and a few years with Tillman Engineering in Port Hadlock. I'm currently retired and Sara and I enjoy winters in Tucson, Arizona.
My hobbies include hiking, bicycling, fishing and, hopefully, RC flying. I'm anxious to become proficient at flying my model glider.

HINTS, KINKS, AND STUFF
J Thanks to Bob Kampmann for the Beaver Song

Ye olde editor: Neat airplane pictures and a catchy tune, but the lyrics include some insider jokes that we can’t appreciate.
J Thanks to Bob Kampmann for this P-38 info:
Ye olde editor: One of my engineering professors was on the design team and thought very highly of the airplane.

J From retired airplane driver Jack Brown: I wish I could afford a flight on this remarkable aircraft, but $200,000 is out of my price range and I don't think frequent flyer miles would apply! There is a lot of explanation on both of these links if you are interested, and it helps to understand the development. Bert Rutan has been around a long time and has invented and developed a lot of different concepts in aviation, a far cry from the usual aeronautical engineers. Enjoy the future.
Jack, the dreamer.

SPARKS—by Jim Cook
My latest model is a Fun Cub by Multiplex. It is a foamy
electric. I chose the Cub because it is docile, slow and those
whopping big tires make me smile!
I have assembled another Multiplex model before, the Easy Star,
and was very pleased with the kit and the way it flew. The Cub is
made of the same type of foam, Elapor.
The manufacturer recommends foam safe CA for the glue. I, being
the non-conformist that I am, chose to use Household Goop
instead. I had used Goop when building the Easy Star with no
problems.
As long as I only used a little of the Goop everything was okay.
When I installed the spars in the foam wing I used too much Goop.
The result was a few ugly craters on top of the wing where the
Goop melted the foam. Who wants to fly a perfect airplane anyway?
This is my first model with a steerable tail wheel and flaps.
During construction I loosely assembled the control system. When
I tried the flaps they would deploy, then after 3 seconds
retract, then 3 seconds and deploy, etc. I assumed the problem was with the transmitter or receiver. I called Spectrum support. We tried everything he could think of for 30 minutes to no avail. Then he said unplug one servo at a
time. Sure enough, when I unplugged the second servo the problem
went away. I replaced the servo and everything works now.
Assembly is not difficult. It is easy to fly and looks great in
the air. I have read where some builders have problems with the
nose becoming a little loose. Turns out they put a much larger
motor on than called for. I am using the 350 watt brushless motor
that Maxx Products International recommends. I also reinforced
the nose area during construction with Popsicle sticks. I do not
expect any problems in that area and it has all the power it will
ever need.
During taxi tests the tail wheel fell off. It had been held on by
a tiny rivet that was glued on. Seth Stephens gave me a wheel collar to
replace the rivet and it works perfectly.
I painted the model yellow using Krylon's Fusion for plastics
spray paint. Turned out nice.

Ye olde editor: There is a float set available that works well and is quick to install. The plane pitches up when the flaps are deployed, so some down elevator should be programmed into the flap switch.
JUST PLANE FUN
J Thanks to Bob Kampmann for this month’s funnies.

FIELD MAINTENANCE
Roy Greene stepped up for June and did a really special job on the runway. He brought his own mower which can adjust to a lower cut than the club’s and got the runway grass golf green short. Thanks for a super job, Roy! Bill Berson was also on the job this last month (he signed up for June) and we all thank both of you for your efforts.
According to my information, Roy is actually signed up for July, so I hope the short runway grass will last another month. It sure is better for the small electrics.
Anyway, be sure to thank these folks for their service to the club.
FOR SALE OR TRADE
If you want to list an item, just send me the details including your name, phone number, and asking price or trade-for item. Low pixel count digital (JPEG) pictures are also acceptable.
From Seth Stevens: I have two Easystars I'd like to sell. One has a standard motor and the other a more powerful one. Just call me and I'll give all the details. My number is 360-385-4675.
